Solid Snook and Redfish
Help Win First Event
The first ever KayakSlam Event was held on
January 12th at Affinity Tackle in Placida,
Florida. The weather was excellent with temperatures in the
low 80’s. The morning was calm and with a good falling
tide created a solid morning bite according to most anglers. The
tide switched at about noon, which left a short time for
anglers to fish the incoming before the headed to the check in
at 3:30pm.
A dozen anglers checked in with a total of
29 fish entered in the event- 8 snook, 11 redfish, and 10
trout. John Lee of Sarasota was the first to check in and
set the bar high with a 30.5” redfish and a total of 63.25
inches.

Seven grand slams were caught. Cameron
Schurlknight of Venice captured the big trout award with a
22” fish and also grabbed the Youth Angler Award sponsored
by DOA Lures.
But it took a well rounded performance by
Josh Brown of Pt Charlotte to capture a 26” snook, a 26”
redfish, and a 16.5” trout for a total of 68.5 inches to
take the win in the first ever KayakSlam Series Event.

Josh concentrated his efforts close to home
and fished the Placida area using topwater in the morning, he
had his best luck with a custom color Mirrolure Mirrodine MR17
available at Affinity Tackle. Josh caught just one snook,
“a lot of trout”, and about a half dozen reds.
Second Place finisher John Lee and Third
Place winner Mike Mahan targeted the Pirate Harbor area on the
east shore of Charlotte Harbor to capture their slams. John
Lee’s 30.5” Redfish was the largest fish of the weekend
and both anglers worked a combination of potholes and sandbars
using topwater early and twitch baits later in the day.
The first and second place finishers won
cash and Stake Out Poles from Capt Dicks Enterprises.
