Slams from the North and South in Naples!

Joe’s Crab Shack in Naples was tournament headquarters for the first KayakSlam event in the Southwest Florida Division. It proved to be a central location as some anglers chose to head south to Goodland and the Everglades, while others went north as far as Matlacha. Which way would be the right way? We were about to find out!

Anglers like the Joe’s Crab Shack Atmosphere

22 anglers entered the Naples event which is almost double what we had in Placida. The KayakSlam Series is growing!!!

At the Angler’s Meeting, many competitors were deciding to go north toward Charlotte Harbor and south toward The Glades. As the first angler checked back in on Saturday, it looked like the south would rise again as Jon Shein fished the Goodland area and started things off with a nice Grand Slam. Several more anglers from both south and north checked back in with a mixture of fish but only a couple of slams. Some quality individual fish were also entered as a 27” redfish and 29” snook were tops in those categories.

Rob Hofbauer with his 29” snook

As the last anglers were checking back in, the top score was 69.5”. Only a couple of anglers were left including David McCleaf of Ft Myers, who is always a force to be reckoned with in any kayak event. David scored out at 60.75” which left Josh Harvel of Cape Coral as The Naples KayakSlam Winner with a total of 69.5” Josh fished the Matlacha area of Charlotte Harbor using RipTide soft plastics and US Reel Supercaster Reels.

David McCleaf fished the east side of Pine Island Sound, while Jon Shein produced his slam out of the Goodland area.

Top Snook went to Rob Hofbauer for his 29” linesider.
